Is it better to have a manual or automatic transmission for off-roading in a Ford Ranger?

I'm thinking about getting a Ford Ranger for off-roading adventures, but I'm not sure if I should go for a manual or automatic transmission. Is one better suited for extreme terrain and obstacles? And is it possible to change from manual to automatic or vice versa once I have the Ranger?
