What is the recommended transmission fluid for a Ford Ranger?

I recently bought a used Ford Ranger and I am not sure what type of transmission fluid to use. I checked the manual and it says Mercon V, but I have been told by a mechanic that Mercon LV is better. What is the difference and which one should I use?
