Why is the performance of the Ford S-Max engine lacking?

I recently purchased a Ford S-Max and have noticed that the acceleration and overall performance of the engine is not up to par. I expected more from a top-of-the-line Ford car. Has anyone else experienced this issue and if so, what actions did you take to improve the engine performance?
