How to troubleshoot a strange knocking noise in my Ford Galaxy?

I have a 2010 Ford Galaxy and recently I've been hearing a strange knocking noise coming from the engine. It only happens when the car is running and it seems to get louder as I accelerate. I'm not sure what could be causing it and I don't want to risk further damage. Can anyone help?
