Why is my Ford Puma fuel economy lower than advertised?

I recently purchased a Ford Puma and have noticed that the fuel economy I am getting is significantly lower than what is advertised. Is there something wrong with my car or is this normal for the Puma? What can I do to improve my fuel efficiency?
